“Georgia” is a young mother of four and is currently 25 weeks pregnant.* Upon hearing about the pregnancy, she felt a mixture of happiness and nervousness. But this soon turned to despair when she told the father. He did not react violently or begin pressuring her to abort, but he was clear that he no longer wanted anything to do with her and the baby. His indifference to them was only one of many problems for Georgia.
When her morning sickness began affecting her job performance, she was let go. This was an enormous blow, and she felt the effects almost immediately. It became difficult to buy food for her kids and cover the cost of rent. Her fears about starving and being evicted grew by the day. Her friends and family support her having the baby, but they are all in another state and can only provide emotional support. As her savings dwindled, Georgia began to consider abortion. It was the last thing she wanted to do, but she reached a point where she could not see a way to provide for her baby. With great reluctance and sorrow, Georgia scheduled an abortion at Planned Parenthood on September 5th. After leaving the clinic, a sidewalk advocate stopped her and began a conversation. As they talked, she told Georgia about Let Them Live. After learning about what we do, she quickly made contact with us.
“I felt so awful being in that clinic,” she told our counselors. “Abortion is not what I want. But it’s my only way out.” Georgia expressed a belief that many mothers in her position believe. She wants nothing more than to have her baby and provide a good life for her kids, but she has come to believe that abortion is her only choice. But we can save her and her baby from the pain and trauma of abortion. We can stand together, meet her needs, and surround her with love. Together, we can give her the confidence to do what she truly wants: choose life for her precious baby.
