When Ilsa discovered she was pregnant, the familiar feelings of shock and sadness came over her.* She had been in a similar situation before. Ilsa chose abortion after being impregnated by sexual assault years before and had also suffered a miscarriage. The experiences left her deeply troubled and shaken. She got married at a very young age and had a son, but the marriage quickly devolved into episodes of domestic violence. After fleeing to a friend’s house, she learned of her pregnancy.

Ilsa’s situation is dire. The only emotional support she has is her grandmother, but she is not able to help much with day-to-day needs. The pregnancy prevented her from finishing college and from staying at her previous job. Ilsa has no transportation of her own and has had tremendous difficulty finding work due to the pregnancy. Despite her willingness to do any job, her efforts have led to nothing. She currently lives with family temporarily, but she fears she will be kicked out if she has her baby. All of these burdens have left her with deep emotional and financial difficulties, and it seemed harder every day to continue on. Feeling the weight of all her trials, Ilsa reluctantly scheduled an abortion. Fortunately, she then reached out to Let Them Live.

“I lost my job, I lost my home, and I lost my support system due to this pregnancy,” she told us. Like many mothers, the desperation of Ilsa’s situation has led her to believe that her baby will only bring more pain and trouble into her life. She truly does not want to abort and knows how traumatic it will be. However, she believes that abortion is the only way out of her trials. But it does not have to be this way. We can show her that her baby is a blessing. We can stand together, meet her needs, and give her the confidence to do what she truly wants to — choose life for her precious baby.
