Jamal described how he had attempted to convince Jada to keep the baby, but had failed and “there is nothing that I can do about it now”. He explained that they were several months behind on rent, facing eviction, were behind on their utilities, and that Jada had recently been in a car accident that totaled their car. Because of this she lost her job, and they were living on his income alone.
Jamal explained that he and Jada were high school sweethearts and parents of two young children, ages 11 months and 3 years. Jada got pregnant with their first child when she was only 16, and they got married a year after she gave birth to a son, Devon.
On Monday, Jada thought she might be pregnant again since it had been over three weeks since she missed her period. Several positive pregnancy tests later, her suspicions were confirmed.
Since they just had a second child a year ago, Jada is concerned that they won’t be able to financially support another child. Those fears led her to choose to abort. And despite his best efforts, Jamal was unable to change her mind and ultimately drove her to Planned Parenthood on Tuesday.
Jada went into Planned Parenthood thinking that abortion was the answer. She had already had two abortions in high school, and was convinced that they’d be able to get their affairs in order if she went through with another.
Carrie explained that Let Them Live could help financially and asked if he could call her and ask her to come out and talk to us over the phone. Jamal’s phone was dead, so Carrie handed him hers. He explained to Jada that we could help them get out of debt, buy a replacement car, avoid eviction, and also help with rent and other bills while they got their feet back on the ground, if she walked away from abortion. Shortly after this, Jada came outside and called us!
Jamal and Jada are grateful that a sidewalk counselor was there to intervene. They truly want to choose life but don’t believe they have the financial stability they need in order to. But our offer of support has given them a glimmer of hope while they face dark times as a family.
Even if it’s just $5, by donating together, our small but mighty community will ensure that Jada and Jamal can prepare for another baby!
