The pressure of rising costs of food, fuel, and rent have been felt hard by Melissa’s family. In addition to these rising costs, in 2020 Melissa’s husband abandoned her and her family to start another one.
As a single mom, Melissa was already struggling to provide for herself and her three other children before she found out she was pregnant. Managing a small boutique store in Denver simply wasn’t providing enough to pay the bills. So she picked up shifts serving tables at a truck stop five nights a week.
Melissa works hard and makes a little too much to qualify for any social programs, even though she can barely keep up with her bills and has no money to spare.
She would consider leaving Colorado due to the extremely high cost of living, but can’t due to shared custody with her ex-husband. With a new baby, she is sure she will no longer be able to afford living there but is unable to leave.
She has no support from any friends or family and feels incredibly lonely and hopeless. She does not want to get an abortion, but with everything going on, has no idea what else to do.
